Information About Construction Safety Nets

!: Information About Construction Safety Nets

How much do you know about Construction Safety Nets? Do you work at heights? Some of us love it, and others hate it but we all need to know that the net below us will catch us if we happen to fall.

Falling from heights is one of the most common occurrences in any construction work. We often build upwards. Indeed, that's a majority of our work. That's a given, but are we always best covered when working at heights? Is safety netting always the appropriate choice?

Very often it is. Do you know anything about it though? Polypropylene is the favoured fabric for netting, in a square mesh, usually. This is because square mesh offers greatest spread of weight in the event of a fall, while polypropylene is both enormously tough, but does not absorb water.

Another major consideration of Construction Safety Nets is that they are durable. When nets fail (which they do vary rarely, thankfully) it's usually because of one of two factors. The first of these factors is a distressed net. If you are working at heights, you might not always consider what you drop. Sure, if you drop a hammer, you'll be a little worried. But what about that bit of salad from your lunchtime burger? Could it contain a mild acid? Is it possible you could have weakened the net? Of course, this is an extreme example, but it has happened. The point is that you cannot monitor what touches or damages the net, so you must perform a drop test periodically. This involves dropping a bag of sand onto the net in various areas and looking for weaknesses. The drop test recommendations can be got from your supplier or H&S officer.

The second most common reason for net failure is the tie-cord. This is often the strongest part of the net, but can sometimes, if not properly used, be the weakest. Drop-tests will help here, as well as following manufacturer's guidance when tying off.

It's also worth remembering that the higher you are, the wider your nets need to be. For up-to-date info, your supplier, again, will be the best source, and will hopefully have current Construction Safety Nets regulation at point of sale. Make sure you file the paperwork, just as you would any other.

Construction Safety Nets are not just for you. Remember that they are also to protect the ground level workers as well. For this reason, it's not simply personnel netting which needs to be used. Safety netting is a wise precaution as well. The right combination of correctly placed safety netting and ample clearance around a site will effectively negate any risk to anyone working at ground level.

Testing and inspection is also an essential part of implementing safety netting. A once weekly inspection is recommended, as well as after any incident which may have an adverse effect on the netting. This could include any scrap metal caught by the Construction Safety Nets, or a relocation of the netting; 99 times out of 100 you won't find anything on your inspection, but given the nature of the risk, namely death, it's well worth checking, wouldn't you say?

Fire Safety Equipment in the Laboratory

!: Fire Safety Equipment in the Laboratory

Doing experiments is fun. It gives you time to discover scientific stuff, and it stimulates the mind and the learning process at the same time. In the laboratory, specifically a chemical laboratory, there are many tools and substances that can be useful in doing experiments. Some of these substances are flammable, which is why extra precautionary measures, such as the maintenance of fire safety equipment, should be taken into account. Laboratory rules should be strictly implemented to avoid fire at all costs

First, one must thoroughly read the safety information on chemicals. This is available for any chemical in the laboratory, and it is more appropriately called as material safety data sheet. This is very important, because wrong usage could be a burning mistake. So take the time to read, and strictly follow the use for all chemicals and their proper disposal.

Speaking of proper disposal, never throw anything anywhere. Again, read instructions. Chemicals are highly reactive, so even the simple washing down of a chemical down the drain can be catastrophic in due time. This is because some chemicals and solutions don't easily slip off the drain. Some can even explode when thrown and mixed with others. So always be wary when getting rid of leftovers after each laboratory work.

Next, you should dress appropriately. The laboratory is not a place for fashion, so keep it down and simple. Wear your lab gown, your protective eye gear, and any other equipment for your protection. Accidents can happen anywhere, even in laboratories, and there have been many reports of people stumbling over acids, spilling chemicals on their skin, and setting themselves on fire just because they are not properly dressed.

Also, don't touch anything with your bare hands. More so, don't taste or smell anything. Improper handling of chemicals and solutions can be dangerous, so do not shake anything. Simple sniffing can also be very harmful, and if you were instructed to use chemicals inside fume hoods, then use them only there. This way, you could keep yourself away from danger and from possible fire accidents.

Next, do not play inside the laboratory. Act maturely and avoid fooling around at all times. Pay attention to what you are doing and never attempt to do anything that you are not sure of. Ask for instructions, and do not stray away from these. An example is mixing the wrong chemicals or mixing the correct chemicals in wrong amounts. Such rashness could result to explosive results, literally.

Finally, know all the safety equipment inside the laboratory. It's not enough that you know these, but you should also learn how to use them. Accidents happen without you knowing that they will happen, or otherwise it would not have been an accident. So know where the fire blankets are, the fire extinguisher signs, the eyewash, and the shower. Laboratory fires caused by chemicals and solutions can be hard to put out, so always be cautious when inside the laboratory. Besides, you are experimenting in laboratories to learn, and not to play with fire.

How to Create Water Out of Thin Air

!: How to Create Water Out of Thin Air

You do not need to be a Houdini to make water from air. You just need to know how to make condensation work for you. And because water is so critical for survival, knowing these tricks is well worth anyone's time.

Make Plants Condense the Water For You

This technique will not provide all the water you need to survive, but it will certainly extend how long you can survive until help comes. Generally people can live for three days without water, but if you are on an island, for example, the sun and wind will dry you out faster than if you were in a cool cave. That said, if you happen to be stranded without water but you are surrounded by trees or bushes and you have a few plastic bags, you can get the trees to give you some of their water.

Trees pull water from deep underground -- deeper than you could dig -- and they expirate some of that water out through their leaves. If you put a plastic bag over a small branch you can actually collect water droplets as the tree breathes out the water. Each 12 inch square plastic bag will get you a only tablespoon of water or two each day. As a liter is 68 tablespoons, and you need about five liters a day, that does mean that you would need roughly 200 bags to stay well-hydrated. That's definitely more plastic bags than a person would normally carry around, but when there is no other water available, even a tablespoon is most welcome.

Make a Solar Still

This will work anywhere, but if you are in a place where the days are hot and the nights are cold then it will work even better. Each solar still you make can generate about a pint of water a day, so if you have no other water source, that means you will need to make eight to twelve of these stills to get to the four to six liters of water a day that are usually required in survival situations.

One way to have that much plastic on hand is to carry ten large garbage bags in your backpack. Garbage bags can be unbelievably handy in the outdoors. They can be a poncho, a sleeping bag, a tent footprint, a signal, a trap and a water catchment system. Oh, yeah -- and a trash bag. That's quite a lot of use for less than an ounce of weight for each bag. For solar stills, you want a plastic bag sheet (you cut the bag on two sides to create an extra large sheet of plastic) that is about 36 inches square. If one side of the plastic is less smooth, put that side down. The extra surface area makes a difference.

To make the still, dig a shallow hole 18 inches deep and 36 inches wide. Put a pan down in the center of the hole. If you don't have a pan you can also make a pan out of a sheet of plastic covering a dug-out part of the bottom of the hole. Weigh the top plastic sheet down at the edges with rocks and then very, very carefully, drop a large pebble in the center of the plastic sheet to create a low point. Your dish needs to be under the low point, so it can collect the water droplets as they condense and roll down the sheet.

One of the best things about a solar still is that you can use semi-polluted water. That's because the water you will be drinking has evaporated and condensed, purifying itself. If you are at the beach, you could even set a still up in the high sand and distill the salt water into drinking water.

Fire Safety Measures

!: Fire Safety Measures

Fire safety concerns safety measures to prevent the effects of fires and is the result of proper use of fire protection measures. Essential fire safety measures are any installations or type of construction that have been incorporated into the building to ensure the safety of the occupants within the building in the event of fire or other emergency.

There are many fire safety equipments like fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fire blankets, fire alarm bells etc.

Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. There are basically four different types or classes of fire extinguishers, each of which extinguishes specific types of fire.

Dry Chemical extinguishers are usually rated for multiple purpose use. They contain an extinguishing agent and use a compressed, non-flammable gas as a propellant.

Water extinguishers contain water and compressed gas and should only be used on Class A (ordinary combustibles) fires.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers are most effective. Since the gas disperses quickly, these extinguishers are only effective from 3 to 8 feet.
Fire extinguishers should be mounted in the kitchen, garage, and workshop. You need to learn how to use your fire extinguisher before there is an emergency. Fire extinguishers should be used on small fires only. If there is a large fire, get out immediately.

Fire blankets

A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish small incipient (starting) fires. A fire blanket either completely surrounds a burning object or is placed over a burning object and sealed closely to a solid surface around the fire.

Fire safety alarms

A fire alarm system is an active fire protection system that detects fire or the effects of fire, and as a result provides one or more of the following: notifies the occupants, notifies persons in the surrounding area, summons the fire service, and controls all the fire alarm components in a building. Fire alarm systems can include alarm initiating devices, alarm notification appliances, control units, fire safety control devices, annunciators, power supplies, and wiring.

Proper fire safety training is necessary for implementing the fire safety measures or equipments.

You Can't Trust Most Fireproof Safes to safe Your Data and Photos on Cds Or Flash Drives

!: Nice You Can't Trust Most Fireproof Safes to safe Your Data and Photos on Cds Or Flash Drives

What's wrong with Fireproof Safes?

There is nothing literally wrong with a home fireproof safe. They are well designed to keep paper products from reaching a temperature that will destroy or ruin them. However they will not forestall Computer data that you have backed up on Cds, Dvd, or even flash Drives from being destroyed. They will not safe photo slides and negatives either.

The qoute is that we may not understand fireproof or fire defiant ratings that are assigned to safes. There are three basic ratings for fireproof safes by the Underwriters Laboratories. If a safe is rated for 1 hour then it must voice the internal temperatures below the specified rating for the entire hour.

Ul 350 - The safe must keep the interior temperature below 350 degrees Fahrenheit. That's below the normal temperature for most paper products to burn, char or become useless.

Ul 150 is the rating for tapes, cartridges, microfiche, and microfilm. In addition to holding the interior at or below 150 degrees, the humidity must be below 85%.

Ul 125 is the standard for diskettes. In this Case, the temperature cannot exceed 125°F and 80% humidity.Humidity and water damage is leading if you intend to safe electronic devices like flash Drives.

Test Your Own Data Media

If you doubt the need to have a good rated home or office fireproof safe to safe your data, then you can try this simple test.

Find a integrate of photo negatives or slide and a print or two that you don't care about. Get two old Cds or Dvds with some data on them. Put one of the Cds in a jewel Case.

Preheat your kitchen oven to 200 degrees and shut it off so the elements don't turn on. The radiant heat could be greater and cause the plastic to melt even if the air temperature is only 200 degrees. Place both the Cd in the jewel case and the other Cd on a piece of paper and place them in your oven. Wait a few minute and you can watch the Cd in the jewel case curl up. Obviously the data will never be retrieved from it. Take off the other Cd carefully that you don't bend it. When it is cooled you can put it in your Computer and see if the data is intact. Sometimes it will be Ok.

Now preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Don't set it on 350 just in case your oven thermostat isn't accurate. When the oven has reached the exact temperature, shut it off. Insert your photos, slides, and negatives on a piece of paper. Put your good Cd back in the oven also on a piece of paper.

You will observation that a negative will practically immediately curl up and be destroyed. The pictures will curl a minute and most likely be discolored slightly. The pictures will ultimately flatten out again but there will be no hope for the slides or negatives.

The Cd will remain flat but the data will be gone. You will likely be able to see bubbles in the plastic of the recording side of the Cd.

Alternatives

Here are three alternatives if you want your data protected.

Get a fireproof media safe. It will safe your pictures, slide, negative, Cds, and Dvds. As shown above, a Ul 125 rated fireproof safe will safe your data from heat and moisture. While a quarterly home fireproof safe may safe the data contents for a few minutes, the likely hood that the data will be safe longer than 15 minutes is very low.

Benefits of a fireproof media safe:

The potential to speedily backup to a flash drive and immediately store your data ever night after doing a backup. The data is ready whether or not you have internet access. You don't have to pay any monthly or yearly fees ones you have your safe.

Drawback of a fireproof media safe:

The biggest drawback to a fireproof media safe is the preliminary cost. They aren't cheap.

Use an online backup system. This is a very productive way to ensure that your data is safe. Well, as safe as you can expect when you are using someone else business to keep your data. If you don't have very much data, you can find free services on the web.

Benefits of using online backup:

Your data is kept in a wholly dissimilar location. In many cases, your data can be encrypted for extra safety.

Drawback of:

You may need to use special software. Software changes over time and so do encryption methods. You may find yourself converting your data or even tantalizing it when a business goes out of business. There are yearly fees when you have a lot of data and that will cost you more over time than a fireproof media safe. You can't store some purchased software Dvds online. They often wish the customary Dvd to reinstall the software. Uploading your nightly backup to the internet is not as fast as recovery it on a flash drive.

Rent a security deposit box at your local bank.

Benefits of a security deposit box:

You have maximum protection. You have offsite data protection.

Drawbacks of a security deposit box:

Limited passage to your data. It isn't there when you need it and you can't regain it every night. Deposit boxes are literally small. You can store a lot of data on Dvd but you can't put many slides and negatives in one. The costs of a deposit box vary greatly but they also will cost more over time than a fireproof media safe.

Conclusion

Evaluate your situation. If you don't have much data then online backup may be the best option. If you have a lot of data and you have many purchased software packages then your best option is a home or office fireproof media safe. Anything you do, don't be caught with a fire in your home and office and find out that you have lost your data.
